I have a1974/75 Evinrude 70hp moor without trim and tilt and want to install this. However the original units are either too expensive (2nd hand) in NZ or don't come up for sale often.
Does anyone know whether I can remove my motor's transome mounting section and replace with a later model transome mounting frame as these seem to be quite cheap here and readily available with the trim and tilt.

Re: Evinrude 1974 70hp mid section

You might try going to www.shop.evinrude.com (there is Johnson info there too) to compare part numbers with your motor. I think you will find that you will need to stick somewhat close to your model year to find other midsections that will fit.

Be aware, however, that many of the older part numbers were superceded by new numbers for the same part. This, of course, can make the comparison a little more difficult. For this reason, I recommend consulting with some of the "old timers" at your local OMC/BRP dealers. Before outboards became so complicated and specialized, mixing parts to keep a motor going was somewhat common. Because of this, many of the older mechancis, who have years of experience with those older engines, can be a treasure trove of information on such plans.

BTW. sometimes you can find an entire engine for very little money, because the powerhead is blown. If you can do that, all you have to do is to "graft" your powerhead onto that motor. Doing so reduces the amount of work involved, as well as the amount of uncertainty as to "what is going to fit what."
