Evinrude 1978 9.9 Outboard Water Pump Question...

I'm still very new to outboard engines and just removed my impeller for the first time.

What i want to know is should i just get a repair kit and replace all the parts, or is just the impeller good enough to get me through the next 2 seasons?

Also, looking at the impeller i see it has a squared slot for a pin to fit, but it seems like the one i have with the impeller is rounded off. Is this normal or do i need to find a new pin as well? Anywhere i could see a clear picture?

Thanks for all your help so far guys, greatly appreciate it. Ordered all my parts from Iboat so far, glad i found this place.

PS: I have a 1973 65hp Johnson that is to big for my boat...what is a reasonable asking price for it with controllers but in no better than OK condition. It will fire but i've never ran it longer than 5 minutes. Im trying to buy a 30HP with whatever i can get for the 65.

The old pin will work fine, although I always get a new pin with impeller purchase? If the inside of the impeller housing looks good (I think it's a metal insert?), just replace the impeller, and you'll be fine for 2 seasons for sure. I run 'em longer, but I've been chastised enough already!

Check your local craigslist/boats for a price for your motor. I'd imagine you could get $700 in 'ok' condition. People like when they look shiny..

Good luck!

Be careful you line up the water tube with the pump grommet when putting the leg back on. Many times it pinches the grommet and the result is no water flow. Best of luck. Rick.

Thanks guys, went ahead and ordered the new impeller piece from Iboats.

Should i be changing the lower end oil as well? From the looks of the impeller im thinking it might need changed.

I also ran into an issue with wiring...seems the old owner has half the stuff wired with speaker cable...Anyone know if Marine cable is a must or is this set up going to be alright?

I need to rewire the electric start as well as the nav and anchor lights...oh and the fish finder...

I change my lower unit oil at the end of every season (which is Oct-Nov here in the great white north). Think of your car oil. You change it regularly also. Same thing.

As for wiring. Any wire of the correct gauge should work but ideally the better grade wire is better.
