I am seeing a small puddle of clean gear lube leak out my prop. I had not run the motor for 2-3 months. Took her out and now seeing clean lub leakking out the bearing carrier. It looks like the thing to do is to pull the bearing housing and change the ONE oring inside.

Looks really easy. Before I do something stupid can someone give a thumbs up. Also, Is their anythign else this could be?

ALSO, can I do the job with motr in up position and not have to drain lube?

THANKS

It's not that hard to pull the bearing carrier to replace that big oring. You'll have to drain the gearcase first. I'd probably replace both propshaft seals as long as the bearing carrier is out-it may save you needing to do it in 6 months. Keep in mind that the 4 carrier bolts have small oring seals-check them for condition also.

Thank you. I did the seals and small orings on carrier bolts. Ran today and no probs no leaks are apparent.

BUT, does the retainer plate need to be oriented in any particular way? My service manual did not specify and now I remember seeing an extra hole in the plate (not a threaded hole). Prob just paranoid....Anyone?

I've always put the hole down but don't ask me why. Maybe for better oil circulation?
