I Bought a 35 HP Evirude this weekend. Told me it was running.. guess what, didn't!!! Well I fixed it so far till i found out that when the spark-plugs are removed the starter motor will spin the fly wheel and when they're in it doesn't rotate? So it seems to me that the engine has to much compression?? Anyone here ever got the same problems? Like to get some feedback before i go visit a mechanic and lose a bag of money. :)

Thanks Ronald

Re: Evinrude 1981 35HP Start problems

bet if you do all this, your problem will be solved, unless starter motor is bad.
90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Re: Evinrude 1981 35HP Start problems

Thanks tashasdaddy but i did mount a other starter and still got the same problems. So you would say that one of the cables are bad or so? I also tried to strat with a running car engine with starter cables. So the problem could only be found in the big cables running from the cables connected to the starter?

Now you mentioned that, i remember a o-ring on the "in" side of the relais and saw that the connection between the cable an the ring is very thin. And a little corrosive. So now i trie to fix that and see if that works. Anyway thanks for the reply and i come back if the problem still remains.

Re: Evinrude 1981 35HP Start problems

Well, tried today with new cables and a car batterie but no succes. Now this is the situation:

This 35 HP doesn't spin on flying wheel, starter motor was stuck at first attempt to start. Then i helped it a little bit and then it worked. But still no spinning on the wheel. Then changed the starter motor from a 25HP Evinrude( Because it's the same size ) And still no spinning. Someone know if the starter motor from a 25 hp is the same as a 35?? If not, i found the problem. If so... well any sugestions?? :)

Thanks

count the teeth on the starter gears. they may not be the same, and not mesh with the flywheel.

Re: Evinrude 1981 35HP Start problems

Well took off the starter and opened it. As we suspect the coil was relatively corosed. Cleaned it with some sanding paper and get rid of the rust inside the shaft. Sounds a lot beter now. So perhaps this should fix the problem? I'll try tomorrow and let you know it this was the problem. Also i found several topics that said to use wd40 at all off the connections to clean, and so i'll try to do that as well. Maybee the ground connection was poor?

Let you know.
