I bought my boat 2 years ago, the motor started up first time no problems. I've been busy restoring the boat and the motor hasn't been fired up since then, the cover hasn't even been taken off it. Anyway, i came to fire it up the other day and not much happened. Basically, the only thing that happens is it turns over, just not fast enough to start it. I'm new to this game so don't know much at all apart from checking the battery & plugs. Anyone got any ideas?

P.S. - Before anyone suggests i buy a manual, i have done & it's in the post. I'm bored waiting for it and this site is far more interesting than reading one anyway!!

Re: Evinrude 1986 VRO 60hp won't start

I'm no expert, but I had a similar thing happen to my '86 140hp. Turned out that a seal (gasket) was blown between the two halves of the motor (behind the carbs, in front of the cylinder). Unfortunately it involved taking apart the entire motor and "resealing" it. I was able to see small bubbles coming out of the seam the gasket was supposed to be sealing, so you might want to check for that.

Before doing anything drastic, I would start by checking the basic stuff like: are you getting a spark from the plugs?, are you getting gas going through the carbs? are you using fresh gas/oil? On that note, you might want to check the fuel filter on the motor. If gas has been sitting in it for two years, it will likely be a gummed up mess and not allow gas into the carbs.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm a noive to motor repair, but like to tinker. Hopefully someone with more experience can give you some additional thoughts on your problem.

Good Luck!
