I have a vibration in the transition range of 1200-1800 rpm. I checked the low & high timing and carb link. When I leaned on the plastic cover over the timing wheel, I hear a grinding noise. This also occurs with the slightest pressure on the trigger plate. The trigger plate is sloppy when you put it on, but is tight to the shaft when screwed down (shims not needed). I inspected the plate and can not find any rub marks!! What could be causing this grinding noise and could it be the cause of the vibration during transition? Any input is greatly appreciated.

If it doesn't make this racket with the cover on, check the insulation in the cover. Sometimes, this noise-absorbing material comes loose, and creates all sorts of racket.<br />If it makes no difference, check the flywheel for play (engine not running), by trying to move it up and down, back and forth. it could be main bearing slop, but check the flywheel retaining nut for proper torque first. It may also be a magnet under the flywheel comming off. They do this a lot,as they are just glued-on, on many engines.

Not the engine cover, but the black plastic cover over the trigger plate that covers the timing wheel. I guess the only way to tell is to look deeper for the source of the rub. With everything tightened down, no noise. With slight (very) pressure on the cover or the trigger plate a rubbing whine develops. With no obvious wear marks on the trigger plate, what else could be rubbing?
