Hey everyone, I had my 1978 evinrude running in top shape last year. Near the end, I took out the carb to give it a good cleaning. After it was all nice and neat, i put it back in and tested it on the trailer at the beach. It started and idled perfectly, all the way up to high PM's. Since i didnt take it for an actual ride, I idn't realize the problem until i got to the lake to go fishing. It wil start, and idle without a hiccup, but once your in gear and go past about 1/4 throttle, it bogs down, stalls out. But it will start up right away, and idle fine at WOT as well, but once in gear, same thing everytime. Anyone have a clue? Any help would be awsome so I can get it fixed before May 24!!!!
Thanks,

If I understand your post, you say in neutral the motor runs well even at high rpms (you shouldn't really rev the motor to high rpms when in neutral). But when you put the motor in gear it dies out at 1/4 throttle.

It is possible you have problem in the lower unit. Is there any friction in the prop when the motor is in neutral, not running, and you spin it by hand? You may still have a problem in the carburetor in the high speed jet. Did you remove the jets when you cleaned the carburetor? You may still have some crude in there.

check for spark on both cylinders. It sounds like it's running on one cylinder to me. Classic symptoms! Use an actual spark tester, OR, you can disconnect a wire while its running and see if it dies. If so, then the other cylinder has no spark. Use a non-conductor to disconnect it so that it doesn't give you a jolt!

UPDATE:
Ok so i finally got to the cabin this weekend to troubleshoot. Since the ice isnt completely out yet, I couldn't take it for a test run. So, It started on the 4th pull, not bad for first time after winter. I ran it for a few minutes before taking off the bottom plug. Well, I didn't get a shock, so I was determined that was the problem. So I shut down, reconnected it and started it back up and disconnected the top one. After getting quite a jolt, it continued to run on the one cylinder, to which I just got no shock from. Is it possible that the coil for the bottom cylinder is just weak??? Any other ideas?? And there is no friction on the prop in neutral, it spins fine. Also, referring to my Seloc book, there doesn't appear to be a high speed jet, it's just a screw. Thanks in advance,

If it kept running on the one that didn't jolt you, it's not a spark issue. Make sure all your fuel connections are tight, and re-clean carb passages and scrutinize float setting Should be level w/carb body when inverted (top secret file on top of this forum).

90% dirty high speed jet in carb. better insulation on one plug. the the correct test, with a spark tester. it will tell you if the spark is weak

I hope you had the LU in water, don't know if that year will run on muffs. If not, you better be putting a water pump kit in it.

Oh yes I've been running outboards for years, and I wouldn't do something like that. As far as the high speed jet, I can't seem to make sense of it when i refer to the manual, it's a type 4, but it says some have a high speed orifice, and some just have a screw in the hole....well mine is just a screw. ??
