Evinrude 200 No Spark ..ITS Firing

I am having problems with a 1997 Evinrude 200hp that I have recently installed. The outboard ran fine the first time I tried it. The next time I ran it, it ran for about 3 minutes and then nothing(turns over with no fire). I have followed the trouble shooting guide and this is what I have observed. When disconnecting the 4 pin connector from the port side of the power pack, spark returns to the starboard side 3 cylinders. When connected there is no spark to any cylinders. The black/yellow wire seems to be functioning fine. It is grounded with the switch off, and open when the switch is on. At a loss here, and any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Jason

Forgot to mention that I also checked the shift interrupt switch, and it works as it should. Could it be the timing base that is causing this?

Gulf, I suspect it is time to invest in an OEM Service manual, if you haven't already. It should have static and running tests for all the ign components.

There is what is called an isolation diode in each pack. These are meant to keep the two pack's from interacting with each other. Disconnect both four wire connectors from the pack. To check you will need an ohm meter on the high ohm's scale. On the pack wire only, connect meter wire to white wire D on one connector. These connectors are lettered, A,B,C,D. Connect the other meter wire to the black-yellow wire D on the other connector, Note the meter reading. Reverse the meter lead's, and again note the reading. You should have a high reading in one direction, and low the other. If you don't, the trouble is in the pack. You have to do this test on both pack's. If you find you have to replace a pack, the pack that is firing now is the faulty one, and that will be the one you replace. I know this sound's kind of crazy. It has been quite some time now since I've done this test. Hopefully, someone will jump in here if I'm wrong.

Thanks to those that replied. The problem was a throttle cable that the end had broken off and caused the mechanism to bind. I guess it was throwing off the timing and causing erratic spark. Motor is running good now, just have to replace the cable. May have gotten lucky this time with a cheap fix.

A broken cable won't let the throttle, and spark advance, but it should'nt shut the spark off. You may want to stay close to the dock for awhile. The information I gave you before would be as far as you would want to go without a manual.

You are describing testing on engines with two packs. He has ONE pack.
However, an OEM service manual describes the same type of testing fully.

OH, and this is NOT optical ignition either.

Your broken throttle cable was NOT the problem. That cannot cause a no spark condition.

Just out of curiosity to those who have already replied, if the throttle cable had broken and caused the motor to be at say half throttle when it was shut off, would the engine still attempt to start or would it recognize the throttle as being too far open to start safely and not allow the engine to start? I know there is a neutral safety switch to make sure it's in neutral before letting you start it, but is there anything like this for the throttle? On one of my older tillers it would only allow me to advance the throttle so far in neutral, and I couldn't start it if it was in gear, but that's a tiller. Just curious.

Under your described circumstances, the engine would start.
There is no safety interlock on throttle position. And if the cable was truly broken, the engine could race up to dangerous RPMs.

That's why when working on an engine, and you have disconnected the throttle cable, it is very important to provide some type of throttle return control, like a return spring, to keep it from over revving accidentally.
