Evinrude 225 Bogging problem

I have a 1996 Evinrude 225 Vindicator that wants to bog when trying to accelerate. This is an intermittent problem and usually happens after the motor has been run 4 or 5 times that day. After setting in a fishing spot for an hour or so, I will start the motor and it idles good but when you try to throttle up it wants to bog down and die. If you pull the throttle back it will continue to idle smoothly, but when you try to accelerate it will bog down and die. Sometimes I have to try 4 or 5 times before the motor will accelerate and put the boat on plane. There are other times where I fish for 3 or 4 days with no problems at all. Once the motor accelerates and the boat goes on plane, the motor performs fine. I have totally drained the fuel tanks and put in fresh gas, replaced the fuel filter, changed the water fuel seperator, and installed new spark plugs.
Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions on what might be causing this problem?

does the primer bulb pump up hard?

does the bulb go flat when its bogging out?

what size fuel tank?.....can you see anything inside that could stop up the pick up?


is the throttle, timer base, etc. moving freely under the cowl like it should?


an intermittent problem can be a little harder to nail down.

I have a 1986 with a similar problem and I think I know what is wrong with mine... but you have a few things to do first to find out whats the issue is. First, when it is bogging, try holding in the choke for a few seconds to see if the motor "wakes up" and allows you to throttle through. If so, are there any other bogging spots after that or can you play with the throttle above that point without issue? If she wakes up then you have a fuel lean problem which means the engine is either getting too much air (leak- hose, gasket) or too little fuel. The previous post stated the timing ring... that is true as well. Make sure the spring loaded arm to the timing base slides in and out without any force at all. If its sticky you can disassemble it and clean/lube it. Try the choke trick first, that will at least tell you if its fuel (if it wakes up under choke) or electrical (no change when choked)

ya check all the throttle and timing linkage as well as fuel lines. but with this problem being so intermittent one thing you can also check or look at is the height the motor is mounted on the transom.while your sitting dead in the water are the exhaust relief holes on the back of engine under water .if they are trim your engine up so there not submerged then try throttling up.when these holes are pluged the engine can't or has a hard time moving air though it.

I have a 91 225 Rude and had a similar problem that got progressively worse. Turned out to be a bad fuel pump. Narrowed it down once I had a friend pump the bulb while it was bogging down and it powered right up.
