Evinrude 225 won't start

I'm new to boating and have a 1997 Evinrude 225 Ocean Pro. Today I was going to take her out but needed to add oil and some Evinrude/Johnson Decarb. I inadvertently left the fuel cap off when I went to prime the bulb. Couldn't get the bulb hard and then realized that the cap was off. Closed the cap and repumped. Couldn't see to get the bulb very hard. The motor cranked and ran for about 10 seconds and cut off. I couldn't get it to restart. I could get the bulb hard but it wouldn't crank.

Could the fact that I tried to prime the bulb with the gas cap off have contributed to this problem?

Any suggestions.

The Big O

Hey Big O.....I doubt the gas cap being off had anything to do with it. Try again like this, 1: Pump the bulb up again until it's hard, 2: Turn the key on but not all the way to start, push your key in for about 6-10 seconds, then with the key still pushed turn the key to crank it and it should fire over in 3-5 seconds,(don't use the fast idle lever, leave it in neutral). If you are going to decarb it, wait until it is at operating temp. and then blast it, use the same procedure when you go to start it after the decarb and every time you are starting cold and you should be good. Good luck.

I tried that. I'm pretty sure I was holding the key in for about 10 seconds. I'll try that again tomorrow morning. I was just speaking to a neighbor and he said it sounded to him like it burned off the last bit of fuel in the carb (from last weekend) and then wasn't getting fuel. Suggested looking at fuel/water seperator.

Do you think that could be clogged or something?

Mix yourself up some pre-mix in a spray bottle and give the carbs a shot and see if it fires. If so, you have a fuel restiction or cloged carbs or possibly the choke is defective. Having the cap off has nothing to do with it. Try maunualy choking it with the red lever on the primer selonoid and see if it fires and runs... Could also be a bad check valve in the bulb. I'd replace it with an OMC brand..

I'll try that. Its just odd that this happened as starting is one problem I've never had with this engine. It always starts on the first try. Its a little cold natured (cuts off a couple of times) but it always starts.

The Big O

When was the last time you rebuilt those carbs? If they have never been done, they deffinetely need it. But I would first take Rick's advice and try manually priming it so you can see if the solenoid in the primer is working, if it still doesn't start spray the premix and take it from there.

Re: Evinrude 225 won't start

I just got back from the boat. I tried one more time to hold the key in for a count of 10 and then try. No luck although I had been away from the boat for about 4 hours and the bulb was still pretty hard. I don't think its the primer bulb. It was dark so I couldn't do much else. I'll try the other suggestions tomorrow when its daylight.

The Big O

Re: Evinrude 225 won't start

I went down to the boat this morning. Pumped the bulb (although it doesn't seem to get as hard as used to). Choked for 10 seconds. It sounded like it wanted to fire but wouldn't. I took the hood off and found the solenoid primer. Turned it and tried again. No fire. I pumped the bulb again and began to smell fuel. I looked and every time I pumped, fuel was coming from the left bottom of the head. The fuel line goes into the right side. I stopped there as I'm new to this and didn't want to try to start with fuel coming out.

Any thoughts on how to proceed? As info. I didn't take the front cover off of the head so I couldn't see if it was coming from somewhere higher in the motor.

The Big O

Let me clarify. The fuel isn't coming from the rear of the motor where the spark plugs are. Its coming from the left front. Again, being new to outboards there is a cover there (with V6 printed on the cover) but I didn't take that off.

Just wanted to clarify.

The Big O

Well that cover must be the airfilter over the carbs. got a video here
http://www.carlskoga.com/boat/sens.mpg
Take a look at it and see if thats what you talking about.
In the video i have take the filter of (easy) and under there you would see where the fuel is dripping out.
(the video was done to see if it was correct that the fuel restrict sensor should sit that untight) and it was correct.

The white thing just over the sensor is the fuel filter where the fuel goes to direct after the bulb, easy to take out and clean.
I dont say its the fuel filter that is the fault, but check it, may be full of unwanted stuff.

Re: Evinrude 225 won't start

Thanks for the video link. Yes, that must be the cover I didn't take off because I couldn't see carbs or the fuel restrict sensor. It was odd that there was no fuel dripping out at all yesterday when I was trying to start the motor but today the fuel was leaking out.

Put the cover of so you more exact can see where it drips out.

Re: Evinrude 225 won't start

I pulled the cover off the carburators and quite a bit of gas/oil came out. Checked the carbs and they were wet from fuel so I was getting fuel up there but, my guess is, I was flooding the engine.

I cranked without priming the bulb or choking and after a few tries it cranked. Went out for a couple of hours with no problems.

Re: Evinrude 225 won't start

Use booster cables directly to the starter to see if it will crank.
