My boat has never seen the salt water a day in its life, but when I pulled those covers off, mine was was really full of crud on both sides. Luckly, I only broke off one bolt. My machinist buddy had to drill the bolt out and put in an insert. Worked just fine. Incidently I didnt have an overheat problem before, I was just replacing all of the gaskets and seals in the powerhead.

I just removed the cover and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. It did have some salt and rust but nothing compared to the passages around the cylinders. I am going to clean the cover and the passages on top of the cylinder head. I was lucky I did not bust a single bolt I think the secret is to put some of that brown sticky gasket sealer on the bolts so they don't get water in and rust. But if the bolts are already rusted you got to do what you got to do What are the torque specs for these bolts? They seemed to be in lose only around 4 ft-lbs. Hopefully my local shop will have the seals on hand so I can give it a try this weekend.<br />Thanks,

I've got some bad news I believe my #6 just blew. I ran the boat for about 20 min then all of a sudden the engine died. Checked the cyliner temps and they were around 190-195 with temp gun. Is that hot enough to do damage to a cylinder? The compression is 2psi on the #6 cylinder the rest are between 90-93psi. Engine rattles from 1200-1400 rpms then boggs untill 2200rpms then runs ok. When I get a chance I am going to take the cylinder heads off again and look at the piston. What should I do? Did I blow a ring?

Well the #6 is toast. I believe the #6 has been having problems for some time. I did not check the cylinder before because I just did not think about it but the cylinder head has some gouges that probably took some time to make. This is the cylinder that had the fuel leak and the piece of plastic in it. Could that damaged cylinder have caused the over heating? If I decide to fix this old rude I definitly have my work cut out for me but I don't know if it is worth it. I might part her out and hopfuly some one can make some use out of the good parts. Although I would not mind learing some thing I still have plenty of boating years left I'm old 24. <br />I just want to say thanks to every one on the board you guys have been great. Every one is helpful and friendly but stuff just happends. But it was probably operator difficulty some where or another.

Keysrat,<br /><br />When you had the cylinder heads off to replace the water deflectors, did #6 show any signs of scoring, piston damage, etc.?

When I took the heads off the #6 piston was fully extended and I did not think to turn over to check the whole cylinder. The head did have some gouges on it at that time. The piston head looks fine. The scoring on the cylinder follows a line on the bubble back side of the cylinder. It almost seems like there is pieces of metal stuck in the cylinder wall. <br />Thanks,

Seahorse.... Thanks for the file size. I've been trying to rig a Avatar file but even small, it turns out very large when posting. I'll see what I can do.<br /><br />Weather in central west Florida, today, was great but it led me into cutting the grass, weedwhacking, the whole 9 yards... can't win!

Just in case anyone is interested I believe I found the reason the 235 was over heating. I took the powerhead off and the seal under the powerhead looked ok so I took the bubble back off. That is where I believe the problem is or was. In the bottom starboard corner there is an indentation that was filled with black sludge. Within this sludge was water. If water got into the exhaust, exhaust probably got into the cooling system. <br />Just in case anyone can't figure out why their engine is over heating here is an option.
