At this percise moment, it's 11:44pm Monday night, not too late. However, I might just sign off to watch the comedy "Drew" at midnite (grin)

OK, it was a busy if not frustrating night.
Did a compression check, looks great
Cyl 1 125
Cyl 2 120.
Pulled the head to check the water passages, nothing major in the way of gunk found in either the head or crank case jackets. Bores look really good with no sign of a piston grabbing anywhere. Piston crowns black but remarkably free of carbon.

Pulled the exhaust cover, (BIG MISTAKE).. 3 broken bolts!! Exhaust cover water passages were somewhat more restricted with some baked on dirt in the passages but still nothing really bad.

Checked out the piston sides which also look great with rings looking nice and clean.

Now I have to scrape out the jackets and get some new gaskets and GET THE BROKEN BOLTS OUT.. ARRRRGHHHH. Soaked in WD40 overnight and due to the fact that there is a lot of thread protuding was thinking of using two nuts in a lock nut fashion close to the surface where the bolt enters the alloy face. Don't want to break them off level with the face but if they don't come out I guess I'll have to try heat.

Should get a chance to check out the water pump tonight but think it will be OK as well.

Haven't a yet found why this engine would have got hot. Thermostat tests fine as well.

By the way the "restrictor" is actually a plug and blocks the water gallery going to the top part of the exhaust cover. Weird but another old fella who worked on these for years said it was an ammended configuration by OMC. Australian motors only??

I wouldn't mess with trying to get the broken bolts out with WD40 or any other penetrating oil. Go strainght to heat. A hand held propane torch will work but get the block good and hot before you try to turn the stud. Don't want to break them off flush.

If you know someone that has a TIG welder, weld a nut to the broken ends. The heat from the welding process will make the stud expand and afterwards you can turn it out, when its cold. I havnt given up on any up to date, using that process. The extra benefits are threds are still intact. DONT START DRILLING, TAPPING OR EZ-OUT.

When you check that water pump look closely at the impeller. Mine was torn loose at the brass sleeve, it was pumpin water fine at Idle, but was apparently slipping at WOT. I had to look close to see it. I was running about 3/4 mile and overheating.
