I have got an 83 evinrude 25 hp. it sometimes just won`t start and when it does go, it splutters every 5 seconds or so and the engine revs die right down and then pick up again for another 5 seconds! I have checked the carb which is clean , am getting a good spark and using new fuel mixed 50:1. recently replaced the head gasket after an overheat . does`nt appear to be any water on the spark plugs. Wondering what the possibility is that the timing is out or the points need changing, would the timing being too advanced or retarded have anything to do with the symptoms? Can the timing be adjusted without a strobe ?
