evinrude 250 v8...trouble picking up water with muffs

i just bought a 1991 250v8 and the owner said it wont pick up enough water with the earmuffs to run. any ideas? i just bought the delux ears that pushes water in bolth sides of the pickup. i havn't tried them yet(25*lately)!when it's in the water it has 10psi+.thanks...james

Sometimes hose water pressure is not enough on used engines, because of air leaks, seals etc...when the lower unit is submerged in water this counter acts those leaks and you get more flow....<br /><br />However its is probably the impeller for your water pump that needs replaced, it is located on the drive saft above the gear case, you will need a MANUAL since you have to remove the lower unit to replace it, the tricky part is finding and unattaching the shift rod, if you don't unattach the rod the unit will not come completely off!<br /><br />Good luck

My muffs barely work on my 85 120hp rude. Ok for a quick flush but I cut up an old plastic barrel to fit under my motor, and it pumps just like it's in the water. Well, when I fill the barrel with water anyways....

Duct tape those muffs to the gearcase and you should be good for flushing.If you don't know when the w.p. was last changed then it is time to do it.That is regular maint. on this big girl ,as it is on all of them.

i went and bought a flushing muffler <overtons> for my 120 omc ob for the noise and it actually makes a big difference with the flushing aspect ive tried it both ways and the change is substantial, aids in creating back pressure works great & your nieghbors will thank you. never flush with out it and my friends keep wanting to use mine. if you dont know the condition of w-p due that first. nothing you do will make up for a bad impeller/seals. just a thought
