your plug wire (being metal) is likely still good unless it is cracked and/or ... broken in a bend somewhere .

Usually the poor connection is at either tip connnection point and snipping 1/4 to 3/8 will restore some good non-oxydized surfaces for the coil's HV pin and you can remove, clean up and reinstall the boot's sping and prick pin shown in the picture above. Some dielectric grease at each end will make it last another half century :)

Personnaly I take the occasion to replace all plug wires with automotive solid strand WIRE sparkplug leads which come with a new boot but since your hobby is not oldies restoral may as well just buy 2x2 feet :)

These use to be about 40$ for 8 plug wires & now they are shown to be 170 ohms but actually measured 0 ohms in the BMX70000 . I just shortened the boots a bit for a perfect fit .

In any event 170 ohms would not stop 10-15 K volts from reaching the open air sparkplug gap. !

How do I pull this armature off?

Just 4 screws nearest the crankshaft.-----One in each coil and 2 nearest the crankshaft.-----Those need to be loosened about 6 turns or so.----

btw to reinstall the mag plate is a touch tricky...
install the felt and retainer clip under the coil ... add one drop or 2 of oil then

step1-... open up the point rub blocks to slide the mag plate down on the crankshaft .

step 2 -
the 4 bolt holes are symetrically distributed ( in pairs) and must be realined with the coil corner bolts and... the mag plate smaller bolts .

to line up the base holes with the mag plate bolt positions I use a skewer stick and push it down in one of the coil bolt position. it must then reach the threaded hole in the base plate . If correctly aligned the other 3 bolts will thread into the base ... finally remove the skewer stick and install the last bolt in the coil corner position.

the mag plate should rotate freely

takes a few tries ...:)

What should resistance thru the coils read? One set is roughly .6 and another set is 1.8

I used to test coils with a ----MERC-O-TRONIC----Magneto analyzer.-----Coils are much more affordable today.----I never / rarely test today.-----Install new ones.

Ordered a used 6-25 hp HV wiring harness from eBay, so it measures .7 on my fluke on both wires. I'm ready to swap out the other one and see if I'm measuring resistance thru both coils now instead of just the one...BTW the metal tag near the boot on one wire that says UP, that is for the top plug?

UP is for the TOP plug if... the plug wire is connected to the proper coil :) Front coil is TOP cyl.

I got it to start! I only let it run about 30 seconds because I did not have it in a barrel of water. Gonna try that next.

So I put the foot in a big trash can and filled with water. Cranked it and let it run 3 or 4 minutes. I may be back in business.

Well----After 30 seconds running dry you need a new water pump impeller NOW !

I've got one to replace it. May do that this weekend if it warms up.
Since you ran it twice you also may have rubber pieces stuck up in your head plugging up passage ways.

Pray when you open the pump you don't having missing parts.

Well I meant to say it was less than 30 seconds the first time. Probably not more than 5-10 seconds. Then I had the motor sitting in a large trash can of water when I cranked it the second time and let it run several minutes. I'm going to drop the foot this weekend and replace the impeller anyway.

Post # 51 says 30 seconds !!-----Hence post #53 gives correct action to take.

Quick question. Getting ready to pull the lower unit to change the impeller. The linkage for the shaft looks different than the video I watched. Instead of two nuts you disconnect, each fitting has a screw, like a set screw?

You watched the wrong video !!.-----That was for newer motors.------You have to REMOVE one of those screws in order to release the shift rod.
