Looking at buying it used. Starts and runs well. Power seems OK on a 16' duroboat. Top cyl. compression = 65-70 psi
Btm cyl. compression = 75-80.
Motor has been used in Salt water. I'm thinking the motor has very little value, maybe $500, due for rebuild. Boat is good and I want it. True ? How does that compression psi sound ?

Welcome to the forums prginocx.....!

Compression is in the 10 to 15% range.....give it a decarb and then recheck. If you have a dealer close, maybe they can do a leakdown check on each cylinder....tell you a little more than just a compression test. Did you get a "test drive"?

The 28SPL's are good little engines that run strong and will give little trouble if taken care of.

$500 for a tired 16 year old 28 hp salt water motor would be very high for south Florida but I don't know the market there.

SoLittle, you are so FullOf!! Don't know the market!! I guess you need a 28SPL for 495.00! Seriously, the compression does seem a little low but it's hard to argue with OBJ on the decarb. Maybe prginocx will keep you in mind if he doesn't buy it.

Actually fireman my gut says the decarb will do little for it. If the numbers were a little closer together and a little higher for each cylinder, like 80-85psi for each, might be a chance to get the numbers closer to 90psi. But strange things do happen in the world of O/B's. So, cover the bases and be sure....

Had to at least razz SoLittle a bit! I agree that the compression seems low and on the Ohio river we don't see any salt water engines. When I go to Florida it's amazing what just the salt in the air does to anything made of metal.

The only salt water I see in the Mighty Ohio is the "salt water" I add to it...... :D
