So today I bought a new to me evinrude outboard. I thought it was a 25hp, but the model number "E28ESLCCR" tells me it's a 1988 28hp. Anyone have any opinions on these engines? Are parts hard to find because the odd horsepower?

I bought the motor because I am changing my boat from tiller to remote. I have had a 35hp evinrude on my boat but it was a tiller with no elec start. I realize I could add everything I needed to the 35hp but I saw the 28hp for sale with steering, controls, elec choke and start so I bought her.

Only one problem, its a long shaft. I should be able to convert it if I can find the driveshaft, I think the part no. I need is 0341649, can anyone confirm this or are there other part no's that will work to make this a short shaft?

Re: evinrude 28hp questions

Hey bud I just helped fixed my buddies '96 28hp. They are nice little motors, parts are reasonable, and they run like tops. Evinrude made a 20hp, 25hp, 28hp, 30hp and 35hp in these years, which to me is nuts. Who knows what they were thinking!

Well, my brother has a 1976 25hp evinrude short shaft that he was thinking about selling. Maybe I can talk him into trading me some parts before he sells. He seems to think his motor is more valuable as a short shaft though, but I'll try.

Nah man I see more interest in longshafts at that hp size.

Re: evinrude 28hp questions

Well I have been looking at lower units and driveshafts and It looks like this, pretty much any shorty omc 25hp with through cav. plate exhaust from '69 and up will interchange with the '88 28hp long. It seems pretty broad to me. Can anyone give me some more advice before I make an uneducated ebay purchase?

The only interchange chart I could find was for 40hp and up.

Re: evinrude 28hp questions

Well I got my 28 SPL converted to short shaft, after removing the driveshaft from my 28 SPL and comparing to a '76 25hp longshaft they were identical. I picked up a driveshaft from a 25hp short shaft, cut 5 inches out of my water tube and shift rod, notched the shift rod for the coupling, got her back together and it actually runs. Sometimes I even impress myself.
