Evinrude 28spl spark trouble

I have a 1996 evinrude 28spl. Recently replaced stator and coil packs because I had no spark. Using a light up circuit tester I know there is now current going to the coil packs and coming out of the spark plug wires. (The tester seems to light up brighter going to the coils and a little less bright going to the spark plug)The spark plugs are brand new but they don’t spark when I pull them out and ground them to the block. Is there another way to test if I’m getting enough power to the coil packs/spark plugs? I have a multimeter but not too familiar with the settings. Thanks in advanve for any help!

Get an open air spark tester can be found for around $10. Is your motor a tiller or remote model?

Thanks I looked for one at the auto store but couldn’t find one. It’s a remote model. The boat sat for almost 2 years, I changed the fuel, filter and serviced the carb and it fired up fairly quick. I ran it in the bucket for about 10minutes, shut it off and that’s when the no spark issue started

Make sure it didn't overheat -- need a test barrel deep enough for water about half way up the leg. Here's one of the open air spark testers available at most auto stores:


Look for about half inch spark, or a little less, to test magneto output. Test with both plugs removed and a fully charged battery.

I just looked it up going to get one tomorrow. I run it in a 50gal drum so it had plenty of water. I tested the compression, 125 in both cylinders

Also had a question on the stator coils i replaced. The old ones has a yellow, yellow/blue and yellow/gray wires, and the new CDI Electronics stator coils have 3 yellow wires with different color sleeves, blue, black and white. I connected the yellow with the yellow/black sleeve, the yellow/blue with the blue sleeve, and the yellow gray with the white sleeve. Anyone know if this sounds right?

As.long as the yellows are connected to yellows you are fine. Have you checked your ignition switch?

Not sure how I would go about checking the ignition switch. When I had no spark( before I replaced the stator and coil packs) my neighbor thought it might be an issue with the kill switch. But there has never been a kill switch on this boat. People say it’s under the key hole on the control box but there is none

In that last post by “no spark” I mean no power to the coil packs at all

Have to ask-----Are you looking for 12 volts from pack to the coils ?

I believe it is a 12v circuit tester. Just a probe that lights up with an alligator clip to ground it. I figured if it lights up it’s getting enough juice for a spark but I guess I could be wrong

Yes you are wrong.-------12 volts from the battery is not used to make spark on this system !-----Perhaps a manual is needed.-----Or cdielectronics would guide you online.
