Just a quick question to all the evinrude experts, how reliable was the little 2hp motors. I have found one for sale to use on my 12' jon boat but do not know much about this little motor. How high should the compression be on these little rascals, are they water cooled, reasonably dependable or have a history of being tempermental? Thanks in advance for your usual informative responses. I did do a search on "2hp evinrude' and it came up blank. Thanks

There have been 'Rude 2s for about 60 years, Airshot. Can you be more specific?

I had a '85 2 that was a nice li'l' popper. Compressed 60-70psi with the recoil starter.

Sorry I did not realize they were around that long. This one I am refering to is in the later 80's not sure the exact year, but one of the little light weight units with one little clamp to hold it on the transom. Whole thing weighs only 25 lbs or so. Thanks

The two as I know it came out in 1968 as a 1.5, thru 1970. From 1971 thru 1985 it was a 2. No twos after 1985 that I know of. All the 1968-1985 were ok. You don't plan to put it in salt water do you? I wouldn't reccommend it for that.

Re: evinrude 2hp

I recently rebuilt a 1973 2 hp, which is the same as the one you are asking about. After new rings and a light honing I got 110 lbs compression before break in. I didn't test compression after break in. I expect like any other small OMC it will run fine down into the 60 psi range.

Nice little motors. After break in, the motor clocked about 10 kmh or 6 mph on my 12' tin boat. Its a nice back up or carry-in motor, but I'd look for something bigger for normal use on a 12' boat. JMO

Thanks for all the replys, my 12' jon is only used ocasionally for a trip to a couple small inland lakes. I just want to find something 3 hp or smaller, as that will sure beat rowing!! My 16' is used on lake erie on a regular basis but not the jon. Thanks again
