Hiya guys, back again moaning about my school's motors. On our 'rude 30 most people find it ridiculously hard to find neutral. It certainly takes some getting used to and definitely does not click in, it has to be eased. It will click onto idle in both ahead and astern, but not neutral. Given it's a rescue boat, I see it as rather dangerous. Is it a fault with the 'box or is it merely that the cables are not joined properly?

Remove the shift cable from the engine, then shift into and out of gear manually directly at the shift handle. If no problem is encountered when shifting via this method, it should be fairly easy to figure where the problem lies.

hello
what year is it? the late 70" and up used a plastic ramp with a detent that will wear or break and that will cause you to miss nuetral and go straight to the next gear.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Evinrude 30hp Gearbox

The shift cable was too long, it was a simple screw job to shorten it, would this explain the problem. When shifting using the shift handle, to motor clicks into gear far more definitely than neutral. Now the cable is aligned, would we be able to use controls with lever locks?
