I have recently aquired this engine and I am doing a service on it before I use it as it has been in a garage for 5 years. The motor appears to be in good nick and is not full of cack at the water intakes and under the cowel it is spotless.I have taken out the plugs and I have found the top cylinder to be down on PSI.Here lies my question. Before I pull the power head down I would ask if anyone out there has used ametech engine restore on their omc engine?I am considering this as the plugs were a good colour and there were no sign of metal deposits or dents in the piston crowns to indicate serious engine wear.Has anyone else used this stuff and if so did it work? All feedback appreciated guys.

I would at least pop off the cylinder head and have a look.Might just be a bad head gasket. But no,I haven't used ametech.

DHP

I will do that if the ametech stuff does not do the job.I personally think that it is gummed up rings with the engine being idle so long.I cannot stress how clean this motor is it has been well looked after.

welcome to i boats, the best place on the net. use the red 'searcg' function at the top of the page. search ' awakening a sleep outboard' it will answer many of you questions, and is a good guide. then post what you don't understand or need help with. good luck. be sure to get the manuals omc for your particular engine

Lubos....I kinda agree with DHP...pulling the head to have a look. If the cylinders are covered with oxidation (rust) and you try and start the engine, you may end up causing damage that wasn't already there.

And, why is the shift handle upside down?

I shall do that then and the gear shift was upside down when I got it.The motor selects gear so it must have been done by the previous owner for some reason I know not of

Re: Evinrude 35 1981 model

Engine is up and running nearly time for a blast out on the Cromarty Firth.I would like to know if from looking at the photos of the engine is it possible to convert it to short shaft and how hard is this to do?If it is to expensive of difficult I shall get a transom mount made to raise my transom hieght from 16" to 21" as this engine is a long shaft and my transom hieght is 16" and from the other posts on here I have learned that the cavitation plate should be in alignment with the keel of my boat.

If I am wrong feel free to put me right guys

Thanks

Well it looks like your motor is a short shaft converted to long shaft with an extention kit. As you should replace the water pump impeller anyway, drop the lower unit and see if this kit is the type that has extention pieces for shiftshaft, driveshaft and watertube, if it is, all you have to do is remove all extention pieces. If not, you will need a short drive shaft ( I might have one here in Denmark, not that long to ship ) Motor looks very clean, and without corrosion, especially if it was run in saltwater, like most over here. Headgaskets cost an arm and a leg over here, our pals on the other side of the pond wouldnt understand the prices !! How did the compression issue work out ??
