Don't think that the smoke coming out of your tell-tale is anything like normal. Click the thumbnail please.

Looks like a James Bond motor, you sure their isn't a smoke screen switch on that boat? Stat or not the steam is just strange.

Looks to me like the head gasket is bad. You're getting water in one or both cylinders. If you pull the head, make sure the head isn't warped.

What should the compression be at?

It can be as low as 70 and will run, high is 120-150 and even higher, the main concern is equal values, a motor with 50 on one and 85 on the other is too much of a difference. 5% between the 2 reading is what you want.

When you do a compression test, remove both plugs. If you leave the other plug in, and there is a bad head gasket between the cylinders, you will get an erroneous reading.

White smoke indicates water getting in a cylinder somewhere.(Probably head gasket)

If possible, keep your lower unit in the water when you do the compression test. You may spot a little water blowing out of one the spark plug holes as the motor turns over. Hope this helps

I did a compression test today and got 109psi up top and the bottom I got 124psi. I did what you told me with leaving a spark plug in to see if it made a difference and it didnt...

You probably have a bad exhaust cover gasket.

There are two gaskets. If bad, exhaust can enter the water area and/or water can enter the exhaust area.

If your cylinder head gasket is good, then the probability of the exhaust cover leak is high.

Is it the gasket the powerhead sits on?

Left rear side of the motor as you stand behind the motor.
