Re: Evinrude 35, nothing happens when i turn the key.

thanks for the reply. That is exactly what is happening. My harness that hooks into my ignition harness was really corroded so i replaced some of the wires, i may need a new harness but it turned over once after i replaced my water pump but nothing close since. i can give you some info on my harness. it has two reds, one goes to the solenoied hot and the other has a fuse and goes to the engine block harness which is where some wires screw into a bracket. it has a yellow which goes to the solenoid, a purple that goes to i guess the fuel pump solenoid, a ground that grounds to the block. a wire that hooks to the back of the head, and another one that goes to the power pack. also the wire that comes from the power pack is black and it goes to the side of the head where the battery grounds to. that is the one that is smoking but the wire seems to be in bad condition. another thing i failed to mention was that the water pump blew on the water and the boat overheated and i killed it and rowed back. the buzzer did not go off but the spark plug coil cases melted a little where it is bolted. other than that everything seems fine. i really hope it didnt crack. im trying to find someone to do a compression test for me. what should each cylinder test at?

Thanks.

I'm no expert, but testing the compression is fairly easy, and you can borrow a compression tester for free at some auto part stores. Not sure if you have Autozone in your area? Anyway, call a few places and check.

Compression Test Procedure

1) remove ALL the plugs.
2) check the compression gauge end to make sure it's not longer than the spark plug threads. And ground out the plug wires (nail in the boot placed against the block works).
3) screw the gauge into a plug hole.
4) Electric start: jump the starter solenoid from the power lead, or turn the ignition until the gauge stabilizes.
Rope start: Pull the rope a few times.
5) Write down the number on the gauge.

repeat for each hole.

The compression readings should be within 10% of each other, not a fixed number. Some folks say 100 psi or better is good though.
