Evinrude 35 water problems

I have an E35, Model No B007116, year unknown, probably 95 or later, but could be older.

It sits for the entire summer with the engine down (Harbour regulations) and is used intermittently to get me out to my yacht, so it is not used much, or for long periods.

It fires up OK, but very little water comes from the tell tale. If fact it only spurts when you rev it up. Seems to deliver power OK, however.

Steam comes out if I throttle back, and the engine runs hot. Refuses to start if too hot.

Steam also appears to come from the exhaustv ports, but this could be an illusion.

It has been to the service people several times. Had 2 major services and gasket replacement etc. They say's its OK. Now beginning to cost real money.

I plan to flush it out: I presume I can do this with the hose attached, but the with the engine in the water? (Avoids haul out)

Anyone got any other ideas? I would be greatful to receive the collective wisdom of this group

Re: Evinrude 35 water problems

My Evinrude 20 had similar problems and a new impeller, properly installed, was the only fix. You may have salt deposits blocking some of the water passages, but I don't know if there's any way to adequately flush out salt if it's been sitting for a long time. I had to tear mine apart and scrape out the worst of it.

New impeller every year. New thermostat"it might be corroded or stuck".. Check or replace the hose from the fitting on the block to the tell tale opening.. While the hose is off try cleaning the inside of the fitting on the block and the telltale opening with a small piece of wire or something small enough to get in there to make sure there are no salt or mineral deposits.. A LITTLE steam is normal when running (depends on weather too)... Do you have a service manual? If not get one.. The small motors are not that difficult to do maintenance on, even for first timers.. :) I had an 85 20hp evinrude with 1500 hrs. I put on it.. With reg. maint. never a problem.. Sorry I sold it :( Still runs perfect...

Thank you both for your valuable advice, which is much appreciated. Will try over the weekend and report.
