I have an evinrude 35 hp 1983 which does not idle I've rebuild the carb with no improvment usually when i fire it in a tank it keeps steady but after i engage forward and put back to idle it will slowly die out, I also noted that when i turn the steering to one side it will increase rpms i don't know if this could be related any ideas ?

Without more information this will be strictly a hip shot. One of the first things I would check is the idle speed. If it is set too low it will peter out and stall. The changing speed as the engine is turned sounds like a control cable problem. A good rule of thumb here (and most everywhere) is to always check the cheap things first. Good luck!

does it run at WOT???

try to push the primer bulb when you get it started and see if that helps...
if it does and stays running while you prime and dies once you stop priming, you need a new fuel pump...

check the timing.... bad fuel.... carb adjustment

I tried it at wot and it seems it lost about 2 knots on the gps I tried priming while idle and even at high speed but it doesn't improve. about the cable I've changed it but still does the same thing, i also tried to adjust the idle speed but it's not making much difference regarding revs

Are you sure you are adjusting idle speed and not low speed mixture? It's hard to imagine the idle speed adjustment not making a difference.

I can't recall the exact setup on your engine since I have seen too many over the past 55 years that I have been boating. Idle speed is a mechanical adjustment that determines the degree to which the carburetor butterfly closes. Some have an adjustment screw and others require bending (manufacturers prefer to call it "forming") of the linkage itself. Pictures would be very helpful.:)

you have only one adjustment, DO NOT bend anything!!!! you only have the slow speed needle, http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167352

all other adjustments fall under linc n sinc directions.

if you do not have good compression, and spark, all the adjusting in the world will not help.

Re: Evinrude 35hp 1983 Not idling

If i increase the throttle just a little bit it keeps stable and doesn't sound revving too much does this mean i still have to check compression and spark ? or shall I start directly by checking synchronization between ignition and carb ?

I've tried to sychro the carb with the ignition following the instructions on the seloc manual but nothing is mentioned about the setting requried on the link between the throtle shaft and the carb any idea how to do this

Re: Evinrude 35hp 1983 Not idling

The manual is VERY vague about this and does not give an accurate pic to go by. Have the same set up myself. There is no adjustable linkage there to set. Mine is running under the flywheel on the right side of engine. Use the pointer as prescribed and adjust the cam follower wheel to rest on cam by set screw on linkage mentioned above. Seloc manuals suck and can be very confusing for us amateurs, I do suggest another manual.
