I replaced my waterpump because I was in the lower unit anyway and I took the temp. on the motor after runnig at half throttle in the lake for 15 minutes it was between 135 and 140 degrees at the thermastat houseing. I then let it idle for about 20 more minutes and it stayed at that temp. I layed my hand on the head and I could leave it there fairly long. The disharge water out of the telltale wasn't very hot at all. I noticed the 2 holes the motor exhaust comes out of about every 30 seconds or so steam or excessive smoke comes out of quite a bit in spuirts for about 5 seconds is this normal??

Doesn't sound normal to me, but could be on your motor. What happens if you increase the idle a bit or are running slowly on the water? I have a 28 HP Johnson and it does spirt, but it does it all the time at idle. If your temps are good all the time, I would not worry about it.. BTW- the temps you give sound about right for those RPM's, if not a bit low. I would check out the T-stat or replace it, too. Just good practice..

I had a similar problem on a 10 hp of mine....turns out the thermostat was in backwards...the shop said sometimes they will not do immediate damage but over time can.

just a thought !..When I replaced mine..I put it back in the way I took the old one out....sometimes the mechanics before us can make boo boo's !!
