Well fired up the old rude today. Put it into the bucket. Started. Telltale peed.

Reved it up and the tell tale stopped! Then I let it idle and it still didnt go!

Think the impeller is done? Or is the tube clogged?

As well, the water in the bucket became very scummy with carbon mixed with oil. I checked the bottom end, no contamination. Is there maybe bad mix in the tanks?

The carbon is normal due to unburnt fuel/oil mix.

Sounds as if the impeller is shot. When was it last replaced? How long was it sitting?

Impeller is probably shot, but you likely have a worse problem on your hands - a cooling system restriction. That is the worst problem to me. I hate fixing cooling restrictions with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns.

And how big is this bucket? You may not have had enough water.

Re: Evinrude 35HP Uh-oh...

The boat was likely sitting for 2+ years without any run time.

Cooling system restriction. Ok. I have the techie manual here and am reading it. I am finding no points here as to how to flush out the cooling system. As for replacing the impeller. Honestly. How difficult is this job to do fellas?

Now that Ive calmed down a bit Ill give a better description as to what happened. Might help a bit to solve this.

Dropped the bottom end into the garbage can full of water (well full, just slightly over the plate.)

Started engine. There was a delay before the telltale began spitting water out, but once it did, it ran full stream.

Let engine idle till choke could be fully closed. Few quick revs. Noticed huge amounts of smoke coming out of the engine.

Noticed the tell tale wasn't working and shut down the engine.

Water level had dropped nearly 3 inches. Might be possible that there simply was no water going into the inlet. Ill have to get some earmuffs and try again.

I also noticed two "nostrils" on the back of the engine where exhaust comes out until the motor warms up. I also noticed that water was spraying out. Not at a high rate, just a fine mist.

Also noticed the water was jet-black and extremely scummy, coating my bottom end in a dark black film. I suspect this also could have been sucked into the water system and carbon could have jammed something like the telltale tube.

So I guess I am asking, how do I decarbonise this engine, and how do I get the gunk out of the cooling system? I was thinking of just hucking the earmuffs on it and letting it go for a few hours without the engine running, or do I take the tubes off and clean em out?

Thanks guys!

EDIT:

Well. Guess Ill be getting some weed eater line and a bigger bucket! Lol! The suggestion must have come in as i was typing! Thanks!

Everything sounds normal. Get it out of that garbage can and put it on a boat in the lake and it will probably be OK. I think your water level was simply too low. As for the scum, that again is because you are running it in a can. Absolutely normal. No need to try to "clean the cooling system". That will take care of itself. You cannot test a water pump by running it on muffs either. You could leave the pump impeller laying on the workbench and water would circulate when running on muffs due to hose pressure. Who needs a pump when you got a hose??

what FR said
the scum is the exhaust in the can, all my engines have the tell al garbage can syndrome of running in barrel, the beautiful 2 stroke black ding on the LU:)

Get it in the water and she will pump fine most likely, do a de carb and then tell us how much she smoked:D

It certainly doesn't sond like it was deep enough. You need the leg submerged about half way when running in a barrel.

Also just as a side note on the carbon. Try to add a decarb to your annual maintainence on your outboard. Running a fuel additive such as Seafoam helps on the preventative side of things. Check the FAQ for the procedures.

Re: Evinrude 35HP Uh-oh...

Well ladies and gentlemen,

Today was a large shopping trip. Earmuffs, battery, new bow and stern light, new oil, fuel, plugs, winch, trailer lights, safety chains, tires and rollers.

And. Seafoam.

So I followed the directions I found on here and let me tell you there isn't a mosquito alive in a 3 block radius and my garage door looks like a dalmatian. It was horrible after I let it sit for 15 mins. But on a good note she fired right up on the first click with maybe 15 seconds of choke.

After it cleared out tho, there is still a little smoke, but barely visible in comparison to what mess was there be fore.

And best of all. With the ear muffs, the little rude is happily peeing again. Doesn't seem as strong, but that could very well be because of the little water flow available.

I have bought a new impeller just in case however. $25 bones. Couldn't hurt to have a spare?

Next up is to sort out the ancient light wiring which shouldn't be too hard. Just time consuming.

Thanks everyone here for the input. You guys are lifesavers. :)

Sounds like all went well :) Nowhere did you mention the year or model though.

Hmm! Might be of use to someone!

I am 95% sure I have a 1979 Evinrude 35952A 35HP, electric start.
