Evinrude 4.5 HP Question

Hello. I have a 1980 Evinrude 4.5 outboard motor Model E5RHCSS Serial E0001388. I installed a home made troll master onto this for use as my kicker motor. The troll master works great, but I'm really confused. The hand tiller is disconnected inside, so the throttle should not work. AT LEAST that's what I thought. IT doesn't actuate the carb, but it does cause the throttle to change. I noticed that there is a ring going around the flywheel with a wire connected to it that turns with the throttle on the tiller handle as well. What is this? It appears to be some kind of timing advance or something. Ideas?

Thats how the throttle control works. It advances the ignition timing and a cam on the magneto mounting plate opens the carb throttle plate as the magneto is advanced

Sorry I have no idea how your home made gadget operates if it does not do the same.
I guess it's just opening/closing the throttle pate on the carb.

If the tiller throttle control is still linked to the magneto plate then it will still affect the engine speed.

For best performance you need the Troll Master to operate in the same way as the tiller control.

I notice that only Johnson/Evinrude 4 stroke 9.9 & 15 hp 2003 - 2011 and 9.8 hp 2013 - present are included in the Troll Master applications list
