Have a Evinrude 4.5 HP 1984 that smokes alot even at WOT. Sometimes it's hard to start it when it's hot. The motor idles well and runs ok besides from that.

I've changed the spark plugs for new Champion QL77JC4 and it still hard to start sometimes. For the gas and oil ratio, I put 16 onces of oil for 6 gallons of gas.

I think my motor runs to rich, is there a screw I can ajust to correct the problem or my carburator is messed up?

I cannot find a diagram for a 1984 4.5 model but see HERE for a diagram of a similar carb.

I dont think yours will have the valve for a fuel supply from an internal tank??)

It has a slow mixture adjustment which may or may not have a knob on the front of the motor #9, 41 & 45 or #10.

The instructions for adjusting the needle can be found HERE

the currently recommended plus are QL86C gapped at 0.030" but using QL77JC4 is not going to make a significant difference

50:1 is the correct fuel mixture

1 pint in 6gallons

2.56fluid ounces per US gallon

3.2 fluid ounces per Imperial, UK, Gallon

20mls per litre anywhere in the world except the USA

2% if you are a mathematician
