I have a 1989 40hp evinrude w/jet. I have it mounted on a 14ft alumaweld flat bottom sled. I am a large man of 315lbs & my son weighs in at 200. I have 2 batts,a 50lb thrust minnkota, 6gals fuel and 40lb anchor. The boat takes forever to plane even when I trade places with my son. I have pulled wet saturated foam under the floor, it weighed a ton. From my research,I see this engine has the same internal specs as engines with 10 to 15 more hp. I do not consider myself an expert, but I have been repairing outboards as a hobby for twenty + yrs. Is there a way to turn up the hp? or is this just a decal game? mod# e40teesr null

alcan, the jet is robbing you of this 10 to 15 hp imagine it as a 25 to 30 hp prop job

Ahoy, Alcan. I agree with John. I find it remarkable that that engine will plane the package you describe at all.

Unfortunately, even though the specs seem so identical to the 50, the differences can't be eliminated by simply changing a few parts. It would be cheaper to trade for a used 50.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

alcan,

just wondering how you made out with your 89 40 hp jet. i have a '78 35 hp rude w/jet on 16x48 monark boat and it does fair with my wife and 2 children. i am looking for more power(aren't we all), but am satisfied for now. i have been around jet units for 10-12 years and the package you described should plane the boat. maybe not run well, but you should be able to pick everything up. you might try motor height on the boat, and adjusting the angle at which the motor sits line of the bottom of the boat.

mojetrunner

it was always my understanding that you should consider jets on a 2/3 rds scale, if you want 60 hp performance, get a 90 ... a 35 would be 52.5 .... so get a 60!
