I just Inherited A ProCraft 1510 Bass Boat with a
Evinrude 40 VRO Outboard. I would like to Know the Year of the Engine, S/N = E40ELCUD. Also I'm
Having problems with Starting the Engine, it cranks good and starts but sometimes it won't
start until I pop the Hood and move a red valve
Counter Clock wise until I hear some pressure relief and a pop noise on what I think is the choke solenoid. Then it runs good. Any help?

JM, When starting your motor cold squeeze primer bulb till it feels firm. Then push in key and hold as you turn to start. Red lever is a manual choke.
Your motor is an 87.
Would be good to get a ser. manual if you intend to do your own maintenance and to help you understand your motors systems. You can get
aftermarket manuals at NAPA,the tab at the top of the page,amazon.com,ebay.If you have deep pockets
www.kencook.com has owners manual,ser. manuals
and parts manuals.
By the way NAPA has 87 pages of Evinrude/Johnson
parts.
Enjoy your boat.

Re: Evinrude 40 VRO Year

Hey Spike,
Thanks for the Info. I intend on getting
A manual for it. Any ideas as to why I have to use my manual choke? I've tried the method with the bulb and turning engine over. Should I do the later every time I let it cool for several hours?

Thanks again...

JM

Yes, you may need to choke it again(Pushing the Key Switch) if it sits very long. That's normal depending on the outside Temp. You should not have to squeeze the bulb again after only a few hours down time, though! If it only starts with the Red Lever(Manual Choke), then you have a problem with the electric choke! Take the hood off when it's not running and turn the switch to "ON" (NOT START) and push the key in and out. You should hear the choke selonoid clicking in the Motor comparment. If not, you either need a new slonoid or have a wiring problem to the Selonoid! Also, when you are trying to start it, raise your "Fast Idle" Lever a bit.

Rick
