I have a vintage Lark VIII 1966 40 HP with selectric shift on my 14' boat and before the boating/fishing season, I'd like to replace the water impeller to prevent overheat. I don't know the last time it has been replaced since I bought the boat last fall.

But I wonder if it's a hard job to do by ourself or expensive to do in a shop, it's a selectric shift model and it looks more complicated ?

The impeller is not really expensive on Iboat store. Do I need news seals too?

UP !

Someone can help me?

The impeller is not hard to do. The hardest thing to remember on a selectric is disconnecting the shifter electrical wires and tying a string to them so that you can fish them back up. If you break the shifter wires at the shift coils, then that is alot of work to fix.
You do not need new seals unless they are leaking.

i have the same motor on a 14ftr 69 glassmaster runabout, carb spitting out gas at the moment,,hoping its just a stuck float, may have to get carb kit,the guy i bought it from supposedly rebuilt the carb,,,hope its not missing anything,,have to get a gen belt too,,,they are $61.41!!,,,i would suggest a manual,,its got a lot of need to know info that will really help in all aspects of your old mojo, they have them here on iboats,,got an impeller off iboats too,,bout 20bucks,,,good shipping prices also,,,very hard to find anyone to work on such an older motor down here in alabama, esp without cutting off the arm or leg,a manual was a good way to go,esp if you are a little mech inclined

Hi Guys, You seem to know more about this old motor than I do so I want to as a question. I have a 1966 Lark 40hp electric shift also and it has been running ok, a little rough but ok since I got it a few months ago. On way back last trip, only around the corner from the boat ramp, it starting revving out in forward gear at basically any speed over around 5 knots.. It finds neutral and reverse fine. I have not changed or inspected the gear oil (not sure how) and suspect this could have something to do with it? All of a sudden it was going fine, then just revved out, and we could not go forward at faster than about 5 knots or so.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Greg,
Next time start your own thread. Tacking on to other threads is considered bad form on this forum. Doing it twice for the same issue is worse.
I answered in the other thread, but check for a spun prop also. There is a rubber bushing in the prop hub that could be slipping. Use a permanent marker and mark the prop from the hub center outwards. Run the motor and afterwards see if the marks still line up

I have my new Mallory impeller but I don't have new o-rings to do the job this weekend. Are they hard to find or they fit most of engines?

Also, I'd like to know what to do before restarting the engine. I shot in both cylinders some winterizing product last fall.

The o-rings are pretty generic, especially the one at the top of the driveshaft. Make sure to grease the driveshaft splines, but don't get grease on the top of the driveshaft or it won't go in all of the way. I also lightly grease the grommets that the water tubes fit into.

The motor should just start up with the fogging oil in it. It'll smoke like crazy for about 30 secs, but that's about it....
