Evinrude 48 hp problems running/starting

OK, just thought I'd get everyones ideas to see what could be wrong with my dads boat engine. Took it out last weekend, or tried to rather, and never could get the engine to pick up rpms. Started as usual on the second try, but with the warm up lever raised, it would never rev up. Only idled for a little while around 10-15 seconds and then died. After it died it wouldn't start at all. Ran the battery down trying to start it and gave up. The last time we had it out it ran with no problems at all, but that was about 2 months ago. <br /><br />Is it possible that the choke is somehow stuck. It seemed to run (for the few seconds it did) like it was being choked. Also, someone (won't say who) left the motor tilted up since the last time we used it. Could this have contributed to the problem if it is the choke/carburator? Any ideas.

Cuda,when you pump primer bulb does it get firm?If so neddle valves are holding in bowls and flooding situation is unlikely.Bad gas?Fuel filter?<br /> I'm guessing your carburetors are fouled with gummy deposits restricting flow through fixed jets,pickup tubes,and or porting. Fouled carbs is probably one of the most common problems in 2 stroke motors that are not used on a regular basis and not prepared properly for storage.

Thanks for the reply OB. I'm pretty sure its not getting starved for fuel,or bad gas, bulb was firm, however, it was running kind of like my weedeater runs when it is on full choke, doesn't miss, but just runs "different", if you know what I mean. That's why I suspect it may have been the choke. How would one check that before they took it in to get the carburators rebuilt? Just want to make sure its not something real simple before we take it in. Thanks again.

Hi Cuda,<br />I don't know what year Motor you have, but I will assume it has a "Primer" system, as opposed to a "Choke", for starting the Motor. This system shoots fuel directly into the cylinders when the key switch is pushed "in" and turned to the "On" position, to aid in starting a cold engine. If this is the case remove the Motor cowling, then when you have the key switch in the "On" Position(Not Start), push the key in and out and listen for the primer selonoid(Located at the Carbs) to click. You may want to have someone push the key switch while you listen at the motor. If you here it clicking, it should be working. If you have a choke system, it is fairly easy to see if the choke plate is open or closed by looking into the carb. throats. You may have to remove the silencer, if there is one, to see this.

Thanks Rick, I'll tell my dad to check it out, as I am about 1.5 hours away from him and the boat. The motor is mid 90's model around 95 or 96 I believe. Not sure if it has the primer system that you mention. I guess I had assumed it had a conventional "choke". Its a SPL which I believe is the most plain jane engine they sold at that time. <br /><br />It was just baffling us since the engine has almost flawless since new, never any carb problems before, even with sitting for a couple months when not in use. Of course it probably doesn't help that we rarely if ever run the gas out of the carbs at the end of a trip.

Cuda, is it oil injected? Is so, NEVER run the carbs dry as you run dry of engine lubrication also.

Cuda, there is also a red manual lever on side of choke solenoid. Make sure it is inline with the choke cylinder in the off position.If so, I'm still guessing you've got restriction in carburetors.Don't think the spl model has VRO. Confirm by asking your dad if he mixes 50:1.

Luna is right. Don't run it out of gas every time you use it, weather or not you have VRO. When you run it out and let it die, there is no oil protection left on the cylinder walls for the next start-up. You are much better off to use a fuel stabilizer(Stabil) mixed with the gas if you know it going to sit for a while. This will keep your fuel fresh, in the Carbs. and fuel tank, until the next time you use it. Also, you do have a primer system and 99% sure there is no VRO. I'm also with OB on the Carbs are gummed up and need cleaning. Does'nt take much!
