evinrude 48 sp starter trys to engage when you put it in neutral????????

Hi guys got a new to me boat it is a 1994 starcraft 170 walleye with a 48 sp motor went to start it up to day and it started right up and rund great but when you put it in driver it go's in great back when you got to put it in neutral the starter try's to engage then it stays running tell you put it un gear any help would be great. Thanks

Sounds to me like there is a short in your control box. Maybe when going to nuetral one of the levers or cams in there is making contact with your key switch wires one way or another. Crack it open and take a look. IF that is the problem it should be fairly obvious once you get in there.....

I have an '85 70hp that happens to be on a Starcraft v14 modified and having the same trouble . Ghosts? I was told to check my controls for a short . Its raining here so tommorrows another day, hopefully sunny. gd luck w/ your SC .

I'm having the same problem. 73 Starcraft V14 mod. ,........Ghosts in the machine .???
