I picked up a CL special..... It starts great with a little throttle, That has not changed. We have a long no wake zone nearly 15 min. We made our way out @2000 rpm & it felt great. We get to the "END NO WAKE" & I open it up and After a little trim adjustment to stop the porpiusing & cavation It still feel great. WOT @ 5200 & purring like a kitten. some nice tight turns & up & down on the throttle WoW its always a rush. We throttle down a little & cruise for a few min then idle around an island for a few more min. and I mean idle, just in gear with no throttle at all @ 600 rpm and it sounded and felt perfect. We fish for an hr or so and now it is nearing time to go to work. "lets get closer to home base We can stop if we got extra time".

Starts like it always does, let it run on fast idle while we secure the gear. When I drop to idle it stalls. well after a little tweaking on mixture screws (did not seem to realy help much, but made a change 1/4 turn each way) I was able to quick stick it to catch foward & get the throttle up a little. It ran great at that point as well as back to the "no wake" We putted @1800 rpm half way through no wake zone again ran great. A little fishing & again I have to quick stick it to get going. we got to the marina & i get close & have a stright shot to the dock so I go to a idle in gear again & it stalls out.

Now it wont idle without at least most of the first stage timing. And HERE is what i've found.

The PO glued in some sound deadner rubber & the top did not clear the flywheel nut. see pic.
There is rubber dust, not alot but some. I pulled the air bleed jets & they were clean.

Now I also enough oil for 10.5 gals & only added 6 gals of gas, (had more in the 18 gal tank then I thought) SO I figure I am around 30 to 35:1 on oil/fuel mix. Do you think this is my problem, Will this cause it not to idle? I guess I should correct this first, ya?

Back home got the motor in a barrel & tring to get to idle I see a slight spit out of the carbs (like a single dropplet or 1 1/2 dropplets spit out once in a while) looked to be coming out of the air bleed. Reeds?

Think, think, think, fret, fret, fret,.......... lets pull the idle needle valves & adaptors out. This is what I found in the top carb idle jet trash 3.jpg (not the dime) it looks to be a sliver of aluminum. The pics makes it look huge, but is nothing more then a sliver. I wonder where this came from And can it be the "cause"? To late to start it tonight. I'll have to wait till morning to see how it runs. Hope,Hope,Hope. Fingers crossed.

:(No joy! The lower carb wants to spit out of the air bleed jet a little more then what I noticed yesterday. maby I should pull the reeds, burnish & flip them over????? Maby it will be a CL special again. Very discouraging!

An increase in oil consumption is normally related to a leak in the gas train. I would check that out and clean the carbs. Reeds can be problematic but seldom are. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: Evinrude 48spl 1990 2cyl Now it wont idle but ran great under load

I have regrouped with fresh gas on a 50:1, checked spark & timing had rock steady spark on both cylinders with @ 4BTDC at base idle @600-650 rpm. Propane enrichment only caused idle to go down & run rougher & running the mixtures screws in also causes idle to go down. The primer is not leaking as I pulled the primer hoses off the carbs & no fuel with primer closed. I found no vacuum leaks around the case with the propane. It fired right up with a little throttle & primer to 1500 rpm. I do however hear a difference in the way the carbs sound from 1000 rpm to 600 rpm. It sounds like the lower carb has a little "psst" below 800 rpm. Would that be the reeds not sealing? Can I "burnish" the reeds by Light sanding & flip them over? I think I read that on here somewhere. What do you guys think. A 20+ year master ASE tech & I feel like this little 2 stroke is whoopin my *****. That is why I am here, I need your experience & expertise. Thank you all for your help.

I popped the reed plate off & here are pics of the lower cyl (1st pic) reed & upper cyl reed (2nd pic) with a flashlight shinning through the carb mounting hole.

@#$%^&* rubber crap from the the PO sound proofing

How would you recommend to proceed?

After cleaning & flushing them out, If I go into a dark room I can see light around most of the reeds the centers are the worst. Is this normal? Should I flip them? Do I need to replace them? Am I on the correct path? What are your thoughts?
