Hi guys,

my 1993 Evinrude 4hp runs beautifully at full and intermediate speeds. However at low speed, such as used for trolling, it seems to be starved somehow. The motor stops after a little while and it's not simply a question of adjusting the idle screw. It is always possible to start it again using the choke (motor warm). My assumption has been that it maybe has gum in the carb so I have taken the carb into pieces. I couldn't find anything suspicious though. My questions are:

1) Do you think that my diagnose is correct?
2) I have never been able to find what you call "carb cleaner" in the US here in Sweden. Is there any other product that I can use instead? Alcohol? Thinner?

Grateful for any advice!
Tom

you can use a product called seafoam, either mixed in with your normal fuel or used in a separate tank for decarbing.
It's just rough on the neighbors. I usually put a can of sea foam in about a gallon and a half of fuel in a pony tank, and run until gone or it almost quits. Let it sit for a few hours, then take it out and run it. Will be rough till the sea foam clears, and might even kill a plug or 2. Be prepared. Cleans the carbon out and spreads it all over the neighborhood as smoke.

Laquer thinner will clean a carb but don't use it on any rubber parts. Dissasemble the carb and soak over night and blow out with air. Might run a very fine wire carefully through small passages. Sounds like you have a blockage in the idle circute. Set idle screw out 1 1/2 turns from closed to start and then adjust from there.
