Ahoy matey's, I recently got a 4hp E4RETB evinrude back too life . It runs fine, water coming out the back three holes and another side hole. Water is kinda spitting out, the motor was just idleing . Should it be a steady stream ? I'm gonna rebuild the fuel pump and change out the lower leg gear oil. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. There's a funny story , on how i got this motor too ??? If you wanna know, ask and I would be glad to share it, within this thread. Think it might give you all a little chuckle, anyways glad to be a New Cadet ^___^

I'm sure we would like to hear your story. As long as it is a story where nobody gets taken to the cleaners.

I would strongly suggest you replace the impeller unless you know when it was changed last. They can fail catastrophically which could cause you to have expensive power head issues. Best of luck. Rick.

Well here's the story, went to the folks this weekend with kids/ wifey went shopping. Anyways my former neighbor flo, waves me over. I drop the kids off with folk's and mosey on over. She wants to give me her late husbands boat motor. Her husband Charlie and I were very close friends, in spite of our age gap. The man was a mechanic by trade and over the years taught me quite alot about cars. It's been 2 yrs since he passed, still miss the old coot.
This motor used to sit on a 12 ft gamefisher, which their 15 yr old grandson had already wrecked and sold for scrap. The motor was missing the top cover and the fuel pump cover broken. She was going to give to me in hopes that I could find some use for it. She knows I kayak when time permits, however I didn't really want the motor. While this is going on here comes the grandson, who exclaims that the motor is worthless and I would be wasting my time trying to fix it. Boy did that light a fire under me, I told her I'd give 50 bucks and get to work on it in pops garage. The kid kinda turned to the side and laughed. I have other explitives I'd like to call the kid, but danggit he kinda reminds me of ME at 15 lol. I took the motor home cleaned out the carb, plugged the fuel pump ( was scared of lean out ) and replaced 1 bad wire to the trigger. In the mean time and this took about 45 mins, the 15 yr old had called all his friends over to watch the dumb neighbor. Who I guess in his mind wasted 50 bucks and a whole 45 mins on a piece of junk. Well needless to say, when the motor did fire up. These 5 young men encircled the now running motor. You shoulda seen their faces, it was hilarious. Apparently they had tried on more then a few afternoons to get the motor to run and with no luck. Must have been the bad trigger wire (lol). They thought I was the coolest , my two daughter's saw me through new eye's. Everytime I try and get them to learn a little about engines, I here not now dad. But this time all the way home, the only thing thay talked about was how and what I did to get it to run. Jeeze this little motor, was an unexpected surpise. I still have to get the fuel pump cover and new diaphram, will change out the impellar, and also lower leg gear oil. Anyway's I'll get to it when I get sometime and let you know how it's going. Ok finally had time to get to the water impellar, and ran into a problem. Tried to get it off and dang, was it difficult to get it free. With some wrangling, I managed to get the lower unit out. Went to go get the part, and the elderly gentlemen at the store refused to sell me the part. He was cool, but told me the shaft has to be removed. This I am assuming, is because of the keyway on the impellar. Assembly issues with the shaft in the motor. So far I wedged to shaft to the side, and took the plugs out and turned the motor trying to break it free. Zero luck = Frustration starting to build !!! then tried clamping vise grip to shaft and prying again nothing. My question to you folks is, should I pull motor from the exhaust housing to get a better look at things ? Or is there something simple here I'm missing ? You could leave it upside down and give it a good soaking with penetrating oil. I'm rather certain I would pull the power head so I could see exactly what the issue is and once apart you can give the socket (female) part a very good cleaning and lube before putting it back together. Make sure you are prying it evenly or you could break something. I would try to fabricate some kind of a slide hammer but only after it has had lots of time to soak in penetrating oil. Sometimes it's the easy repairs that give you the most difficulty. That's life. Rick.

Have gotten a 1999 6hp motor changed water pump, cleaned out thermostat
housing, new head gasket, cleaned out all carbon on top of heads,
took off exhaust cover onside of motor was loaded up with carbon
cleaned out pistons look good ,good compression, water and exhaust leaking in front of motor was doing it before water pump was changed, good stream of water coming out of tube as should be , but after all that work exhaust still
heavy from front of engine , does head need to come off to change gaskets
and grommet on top of water tube , engine still runs good great mosquito
outboard

Hey rick will do with the penetrating oil, had to laugh when I read your slide hammer suggestion. I Mcgyverd a slide with a rope and 10 lb weight no luck. Will soak with the oil and have another go. Good going seahunt09 on your 6hp restore. No on your question about water pipe grommet, head stays on. I believe you have to remove exhaust housing to get to said grommet. Also just a suggestion, you should change out the gasket that cover's the exhaust ports and water passages ways. That's probably where exhaust leak is coming from. I got some redneck ideas, but gonna let it brew for awhile longer before I make a move. Will let you know how it goes. Peace R/R
