Re: Evinrude 4hp Help

Looking at the picture he has the points hooked to the right coils. I got a motor that had them hooked up wrong and it took me forever to figure it out. If they were hooked up wrong the wire would be pulled over the top of the points to be able to hook it up with the cond.:)

The one reading 7.4 is the good one. Just swap the two coils and see if the other plug fires, then you know its the coil.

Re: Evinrude 4hp Help

Swapped them over and the 4.3 worked on the bottom cylender but still no joy on the top. I did another continuity test on the HT Lead of the higher cylender and get readings from 0.7-0.2, whereas on the Lowerone i get a solid 0.1

Maybe a lead problem?

Also how do i change the point gap?

Now you know you have two good coils. Now swap the cond. over and see if the problem follows. I am betting the points are dirty on the cylinder not firing. You can cut a little wire off each end of the plug wire to get back into some good wire. You should be able to get .001 on that wire also.

Re: Evinrude 4hp Help

Pull the plugs if they are not out. Put the motor in gear and spin prop so the crank is turning clockwise, never turn the crank counterclockwise. So, turn the prop with your foot while looking down at the cam that opens and closes the points. You want to be on the highest point, the cam might say top or set, this is usually the highest spot. Then just loosen the hold down screw a little and turn the screw in the slot to move the points in and out. Set them at .20. You should really clean them, and not just regap them.
