hi everyone just want to start off saying i love this forum growing up i always went fishing with my uncle suddenly in 1996 he passed away when he did his old starcraft with a 50 evinrude sat in the backyard under a tarp it ran in 1996 i enlisted in the Air force and moved away Recently i got stationed close to home and was visiting my aunt when i asked her what she was doing with the old boat she said nothing I told her i was going to bring it home and take a look she sayed ok on the condition that we no matter what will keep the boat in the family as it is one of the only thing we had left of my uncles, so i stripped the boat and focused on the RUDE I know enough about outboards to get me by (hell Im a Aircraft mechanic I under stand mechanics) But this whole eletricshift has me all thown for a lupe i tried using the pull start to check if compresson was still there or if they were seezed. good compression no keys so i ordered a new ignition switch but cant get starter to spin. so i jumped power to starter it spins but not fast. with this eletric shift is there something special, were should i go from here to get this motor back in the water were it belongs at least get it purring at all. and is there any wiring diagrams out there or were can i get manual on this motor. are these motors with electrishift worth the time. Just some guidence would be gratefull Thanks WOuld it be best to remove all wiring and motor and just start by shooting all wires from controls back or motor back

My eyes hurt after reading all of that. Don't be afraid to use a periods and commas. Paragraph breaks would also help out a lot.;)

Post your model number. If you have compression numbers, post them also.

The starter probably spins slow because of a weak battery and/or corroded connections.

Manuals can be found on ebay or Ken Cook etc. Buying a manual will save you a TON of time and money.

Re: Evinrude 50173s

Thank you for your service to our great country. You have my respect and appreciation.

First, technically it is not "Electric Shift". It is Hydro-Electric Shift". It is shifted hydraulically. All the electric part does is operate a couple of oil flow control valves which cause the hydraulic part to do its thing. There is an oil pump in the lower unit, which supplies the hydraulic oil pressure. Obviously, it cannot supply pressure if it is not running, so it will always default to forward gear if not running.

Secondly, the shift mechanism has nothing to do with anything you are currently attempting to do, so don't get too concerned about that part just now.

If the wiring is in bad shape, certainly you should address the issue. You wouldn't send an airplane out with bad wires. Sure, the results of a plane crash are more serious than a boat break-down, but....

Not meaning to be a wise guy, but you really need to invest in a factory service manual. It will explain all the systems, and will contain a proper wiring diagram. The motor is easy enough to understand and repair if you know what you are doing. With your background, that won't be difficult. You didn't learn how to fix an airplane by fumbling around with one. And you will find the technology of the Evinrude to be very interesting as you proceed with your project.

BTW, the Hydro-Electric system is very good. The problem comes with abuse, neglect, and lack of understanding the system.

Thank You F_R, A fatorcy service manual can be found...... I just dont want to get a manual that is a rip off and a waste of money. as far as the Hydro-Electric system ive been reading more and more posts and the system is actuall pretty simple for my current outcome im trying to reach. I have a feeling that i may have mixed a wire up some were when i installed the new ignition switch. so i think i will start from the controls back does that seem to be the correct path.

T I just dont want to get a manual that is a rip off and a waste of money.

if you get an original factory service manual(or an authentic reproduction) it will def NOT be a waste of money. Don't get a generic Clymer, Seloc manual if you can help it.

Re: Evinrude 50173s

OMC has used two electric shifts, one was a straight electric and the other was a Hyro-electric. Their for I question your model #, looking in my reference book, Evinrude model #'s starting with 50 where the 1958, 1959 50 HP's and the 1960 75 HP. The 1960 75 was avalable with electric shift, which was not the Hyro-electric shift that was used from 1969-1972. The 75, 80, 85, 90 and 100HP (and may be the 60 and 65)with electric shift V-4's from 1960-1968 used magnets and springs in the gear case and would fail to neutral. You will need a service manual to work on either one, good luck.
