I have a 1974, Evinrude 50hp, with the large gearbox same as the V4 gearbox. I have just changed the water pump impeller, when I run it up in a test tank the engine stays cool, but it concerns me that there appears very little water coming out of the outlet at the top of the leg and a lot of water coming from the bottom of the leg somewhere around the bottom mounting and gear selector rod. Has anybody any suggestions that may help.

Re: Evinrude 50hp cooling.

For the most part at idle there isn't usually alot of water coming out of the top part of the lower unit, try revving it up and see if it increases. Most of the exhaust comes out of the prop so there is always more water flow towards the bottom of the lower unit. Maybe that motor is too old, but you can also usually tell if it is getting enough water by looking at the tell-tale coming out by the cover, if that has good flow then you should be alright.

Re: Evinrude 50hp cooling.

Thanks mmcpeck, I have run the engine in a test tank at tick over and reving the motor up. I can see no tell tale on this motor, I dont think they fitted them to these older motors, the out let at the top of the leg I was refering to, I believe does a simular job which is my main concern, as there is very little water comming out of it.Although as I said the motor did not overheat in the time it was running in the tank which was about 20 minutes The water I mentioned that is showing at the base of the leg appears to be pumping out around the area of the gear selection rod where it enters the bottom housing between the leg and the bottom mounting. I dont think there should be, a lot of water showing if any in this area.
