I have a 1973 evinrude 55 hp. It has set durning the winter. I am getting it ready for this spring. I started it up and black oil and water was shooting out of the prop. It was quite a bit , it covered the bottom of my garage door. Please tell me this is not a major problem.

Its not. But running the motor without water muffs on is.

Re: Evinrude 55hp

hi rob,

the guys are right.
2-stroke. oil in the gas. the unburnt portion of the oil as well as carbon build-up in exhaust will be blown all over the garage floor.

maybe next time, do it outside.

bye-the-bye, is this motor "new" to you? If you don't know the history, you might want to run a decarb (do a searh in this forum for "decarb"), replace the impeller (water pump) and service the lower unit.

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!

Re: Evinrude 55hp

I just got the boat last year. I had a compression test done and the carbs rebuilt. The motor runs great. I checked the grease in the lower unit and it seemed to be fine. I was just concerned because the boat sat outside durning the winter.
What do I need to do to fix this problem, just let the engine run .
