Hello, just picked up a nice little Evinrude 6 hp Fisherman. Hadn't run in 10 years. Started up on the 3rd pull. However, i could not tell if the water pump was working. There is a hole half way up but no water was coming out. Is this a concern? Also, like to know the year it was made. Serial # is
61026-J15563. Thanks everyone.

Yep, it's a 6102G. 1971.

I am hearing that my impeller is bad. Are they hard to replace? Local marine shop said $200 for the part plus labor. I see the part is only $14. Should i attempt it? Thanks

Replacing the water pump is probably the easiest maintenance that you can do, outside of changing the lower unit oil. Take out the lower unit mounting bolts, drop the unit a bit, disconnect the shift linkage, then pull the lower unit off (you need to rotate the flywheel until the pin that is at the top of the driveshaft aligns with the slot in the exhaust housing). Take off the water pump housing, replace the impeller, than assemble in reverse. Make sure the seals at the top of the drive shaft are in good shape. Then you can take the $185 you saved and get a good manual.... ;)

And if you change the lower unit lube, don't take out the phillips head screw!

Sounds easy. Let's see how bad I screw it up. ;-) Thanks for the advice. I will dig in after the weekend.

Uh, don't you have to remove the power head on the 6's the same way you have to do it on the 5.5's? I always thought they were the same? Or did they change it over time?

No, they changed the sixes so you no longer have to do that. The only REAL reason they made you do that on the 5.5 was that the carbon seal would fall apart if you were to merely pull the shaft out. The shift rod was only a secondary reason.

They made the carbon seal captive on the sixes so it doesn't fall apart. That is the reason the shaft has to be rotated--to align the pin with the slot in the captive "shelf". Once you get the gearcase removed, note the position of the pin so you can put it back the same for reinstallation. And don't rotate the flywheel while the gearcase is off.
