The person I bought this Evinrude 6 hp outboard serial #311-239, said that it was assembled in 1969. It runs great but the problem I have is that I need to replace the plastic gear that engages the flywheel when the starting cord is pulled. The gear has been stripped because we were pulling the cord without the gear fully engaged in the flywheel, we now know better. There is a pin that holds the gear to the shaft and I cannot figure out how to get the pin out to replace the gear. Is there a special tool I should be using or perhaps a "secret technique"? Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Re: Evinrude 6 hp

Hi Youngie<br /> You must first disassemble the recoil starter. This means allowing it to unwind. You will need to remove the starter from the power head. You should be able to pull the roll pin out with pliers once the presure is off. I suggest you obtain a manual for this operation. There are some safety concerns to watch for while working on these things.
