I have about a 1989 Evinrude long shaft for my 24' sailing catamaran. It hangs off the rear beam of my boat on a laterally swinging bracket and I always seem to have problems with it getting dunked under waves. This is disconcerting in weather comming into a small entrance and I have landed on the rocks. When this happens it has got water into the airbox which I have solved with an extra drain hole. But I have noticed a jolt from the tiller control so I will follow up on the short angle from some other discussions. Any other help would be great.

Re: Evinrude 6 waterproofing problems

Welcome aboard iboats Aussie cat.

Was wondering, are you trying to keep the motor dry while using it or just keeping it dry until you do need it?

If it's just hanging there not being used, a good canvas cover that fits tight over the hood will keep the water out until you need it.

But under way, may be a problem unless it's mounted a little higher. Don't know the set up on your rig.

(EDIT) Have you looked into a auxilliary motor mount that raises when not in use? These lift the engine pretty high outta the water.

As a side note, where is the cavitation plate in relation to the bottom of your hull?

Re: Evinrude 6 waterproofing problems

Yeah guys

1 I've already thought about the cover while sailing and the motor not in use and have something being sorted to keep the tiller handle dry as well as water from spraying up the air intake in the cover.

2 The higher bracket is a bit of a problem on my boat as it has to stay below the tiller connector bar across the hulls and it cant come any further forward because of the traveller and mainsheet on the rear beam. I had a lifting bracket on my last cat and that worked ok.

I'll look at the electrical side of things and see if there's a short in the tiller arm when its wet and use the cover when not in use and see what happens. But under way the waves can still poop me and I think it gets a gutful up the intake and I get tingles on the tiller. Any ideas on hte air intake in the cover? One guy who assisted me when I needed rescue wisecracked about a snorkel.
