I have just purchased a 1983 evinrude 60 twin outboard. I saw the engine running and intially there was no water coming out of the tell tail and was told it wount until the thermostat opens, but it didnt. Bit concerned, as all the other engines i have owned started pumping from the second they fire up. This one only started pushing water out (and not very strongly) after i back flushed it with a hose pipe.
I was told the impeller was recently changed as well as the thermostat and indeed saw the old ones. Does any one have any knowledge of these engines as to why it should be pumping so weakly, have they got any characteristics that cause this?. My thoughts are, impeller housing worn, wrong/faulty thermostat (but they usually fail open) or a blockage due to salt built up as it was used in the sea 9can this be properly flushed out). It runs lovely and smooth, 160 psi on each pot and virtually new electrics, its just weak at the tell tail. Any pointers would be appreciated before i totally strip it. Cheers Rob.

nope, that didnt do a thing. took pipe off and fed 250lb mono through with a knot in it, a little crud came out but nothing significant.

oh well bottom end off i suppose and check the impeller housing.

do these engines require thermostats if so any idea of the operating temp?
or can they be run without one ?

proper thermostat is part # 378065. yes they can run without on, but will run cold, effecting preformance, cause carbon build up, and possible smoking exhuast, as poorly burnt fuel. you can remove it, and see if you get good flow, also test it in a pot of water, should start to open at 140 *F. also the key may have come out of the impeller when reassembling, and slipping not putting out what it should. you can find engine diagram here:
