I am completely new to this engine. The powerhead is in good shape, good
compression on all four cylinders, drivetrain is sound. However, the plugs
show no spark. On the magneto there is a black wire, and there is a
white wire hooked to a little switch on top of the mag bracket.
*These two wires dangle loosely out of the cowling.*
Do these wires hook directly to a battery, or am I going to fry out the coil
trying this... anyone know where they go in the boat, like to a voltage
regulator or something?

Also, when I remove the timing belt, the magneto spins freely, there is
a small charge from the coil, but not enough to create spark; should
there be more 'resistance' from the magnets, or is this free spinning mag
common on these boat motors? I have worked on impulse magnetoes
on tractors, which click while turning, and this seems odd.
Evinrude 60 electric start-- without the starter {pullrope}

do not hook to battery you will smoke the coil i made that mistake , if i remember correct the black wire goes to mag the white to switch my mag spins pretty freely , first thing i would check if has not run in a while is points get yourself a book they sell em here in iboats you may need it to retime it now that you have the belt off im sure others can tell you more in better detail than i but dont send juice to that mag good luck

yes, the wires hook to the mag and the switch, but what do they hook up to
in the boat? I think I fried the coil already {oops}

Re: Evinrude 60653R stuff

Stark is a little fishing village of 85 people, about 70 miles northwest of Joplin Missouri as the crow flies.
I got this motor from the local junkyard about a month ago, in peices, and am in the process of mounting it on a Formula 21 footer. The boat itself is a handymans' dream,
rotten transom, no flooring, no controls, very rough fiberglass, in drydock right out my
back door. Being an upper class loser, I choose to use only the finest materials for my
garbage scows {lol}..... anyway, should the mag throw out a spark without these wires?
no smoke when I hooked up the battery to it.... :eek:
