evinrude 60hp 1989-Warning horn did not work when engine overheat

Hi all,

I have an evinrude 60hp 1989 that the previous owner disconnected the VRO. Last summer I had an engine overheat and the warning horn never worked. I have grounded the temperature sensor cable (tar) with the key on and it is not working.

1) Could be that the previous owner disconnected it when he disconnected the VRO?
2) could I have the warning horn working just for overheating alarms?
3) How I can connect it to avoid VRO alarms and have overheat alarms?

Hi all,

I have grounded the temperature sensor cable (tar) with the key on and it is not working.

You do not ground the temp cable - with the key ON you ground the wiring harness side of the tan wire that connects to the temp switch.

If the horn does not sound, then the wiring or the horn is bad. Remove the horn and connect across a 12V battery.

If the motor overheated badly, it could have melted the rubber around the temp switch or even damaged the switch.

I already test the temp switch with a tester in boiling water and it works well.

How I open the control box to remove the warning horn??

You tested it in boiling water and it works ??????????

I thought all the sensors needed a much higher temp than just boiling water
thats only 100 deg centigrade/celsius.

anyway , check the vro plugs to see if grounding them makes the buzzer go off.
if it does you have a wire problem at engine end, and very simple fix.


and to open the control box is easy
just get allen key for the bolt that goes through from back to control lever
then undo the bolts around the outer edge of the box.

take it slow and make sure you dont crimp any wires when re assembly takes place.
