Hi all,

I have an Evinrude 60hp TLC 1989 and I want to change the water pump.

How do I disconnect the Shift rod from the engine to remove the lower unit?

I have take a look and it is inserted in the middle of the engine and I can not see how disconnect it to remove the lower unit.

Thanks for your help..

There is a retainer pin in the shift lever that runs through the base of the crankcase (starboard side).....once you have the shift lever discoonnected from the rest of the linkage remove the retainer pin.....the shift lever can then be slid through its bushings, this should release the shift rod.

If you look where the rod is in the middle under the carbs at the back youll see a small bolt head.
you undo this bolt head and slide the small metal piece away from the rod.
this will then let the shaft go down with the gearbox.
Its best to remove the bottom carb to try and gain better access ,but it is very limited.

This is a bit of a tricky job first time round, but easy when you have done a few.
Now just remember to have patience when putting it back on, as you need to feel by hand etc.
And do make sure you nip it up correctly, its not a job to be done on the water thats for sure.
