Hello, i have recently mounted an 1988 60HP evinrude motor to my fishing boat that was stored for at least 15 years, the motor was practically new, just never used, when i mounted i started to work great, then it stopped but started again, when i got back home i have serviced all the fuel system, and when back to the water, the same problem, the motor works fine for hours, then it just literally dies, no current on the ignition system, no spark at the plugs, but then after a few hours it comes back to life, and works like it's new. i am lost, here are a few things that i have tried when it dies, no spark in either the spark plugs, i have disconected the motor plug to the controls and jumped the starter, but still nothing, the electrical system dies, and then as i told you when he wants to, it works again. Any ideas?

when you turn the key does anything happen? Does the trim switch still work?

sounds like a loose wire somewhere... by unhooking the plug you have isolated it to the engine which is good.

Re: evinrude 60HP works sometimes

Hello, thank you for your posts, when the engine stops firing, it still has trim, starter, choke selenoid, every thing works, it just wont fire, i was mesuaring the voltage between the coil and ground, from terminal a (of the coil) and grond there are 1.8 volts when cranking the engine, then from terminal b and ground there are 5 volts, and from terminals A and B of the coil there is about 60 Volts Rms when cranking the engine, i have read that i need at least 250 Volts peak between these terminal wich equals about 175 Volts Rms, and i should not have voltage between terminals and ground, any comments? Thank you
