I have a 1973 evinrude 65hp and sometimes when I go out the boat starts to bogg down at full speed. It spits and sputters until I back off. It is almost like I am running on 1 cylinder. The fuel pump was rebuilt ( I guess that didn't work) Could it be my power pack / coils? Also, I need a stator because it is leaking the insulation down on the motor would this be the cause?

Thanks
Shannon

The stator (beginning of the ignition and charging system) is melting down and failing. First, replace the stator, then if the problem still exists, we can go on from there.

Note that it unusual for that stator to melt down unless the rectiofier has shorted out. If you have a tachometer and it operates as it should, the rectifier is okay. However, you can test the rectifier as follows:

(Small Rectifier Test)
(J. Reeves)

Remove the rectifier wires from the terminal block. Using a ohm meter, connect the black lead of the ohm meter to the rectifier base (ground), then one by one, connect the red lead of the ohm meter to the yellow, yellow/gray, then the red wire (some rectifiers may also have a fourth yellow/blue wire. If so connect to that also). Now, reverse the ohm meter leads and check those same wires again. You should get a reading in one direction, and none at all in the other direction.

Now, connect the black lead of the ohm meter to the red wire. One by one, connect the red lead of the ohm meter to the yellow, yellow/gray, and if present, the yellow/blue wire. Then reverse the leads, checking the wires again. Once more, you should get a reading in one direction and none in the other.

Note that the reading obtained from the red rectifier wire will be lower then what is obtained from the other wires.

Any deviation from the "Reading", "No Reading" as above indicates a faulty rectifier. Note that a rectifier will not tolerate reverse polarity. Simply touching the battery with the cables in the reverse order or hooking up a battery charger backwards will blow the diodes in the rectifier assy immediately.

I know that Joe Reeves knows this from all his experience, so he probably didn't notice the 1973 year. The charge coils for that year almost all melted down due the type of insulation that was used in them. Now, having said that, perhaps the stator has already been replaced and you have meltdown of the new type coils. In that case, backfeed from the rectifier could very well be the problem.

I noticed the 1973 year but assumed that within the past 34 years that the stator had been changed for one reason or another from the original non insulated component of that era to the improved insulated stator that we're now aquainted with.
